October in the Pacific Northwest is beautiful, but it can also bring wet leaves piling up on the lawn, gutters stuffed with debris, wind-damaged tree limbs, and hedges that got away from you over the summer. All of it can leave your yard looking a little chaotic as we head into winter.

The good news is that none of these issues are hard to deal with if you have the right tools. And at Carl’s Mower & Saw, we’ve got everything on this list, plus a team that can help you figure out exactly what makes sense for your yard and your budget.

Here are the fall yard debris cleanup tasks worth tackling now, along with the tools that can make each one a whole lot easier.

How Do I Clean Out My Gutters Without Getting on the Roof?

The easiest way to clean out your gutters without getting on the roof is to use a gutter cleaning attachment with your leaf blower.

Gutter cleaning is one task that most people put off the longest because the traditional approach (climbing a ladder, scooping out debris, moving the ladder, and repeating the process) is slow, annoying, and sometimes downright dangerous on a wet day. Trying to lie on the roof and hang over the edge isn’t much better.

But gutters packed with damp leaves, pine needles, pine cones, moss, and twigs can cause damage if that debris is left in place. All that moisture sitting against your fascia boards leads to rot, and backed-up gutters can push water under your roof line and into your walls.

That’s where a gutter cleaning attachment can save you a lot of time and ladder climbing. The STIHL Gutter Cleaning Kit attaches to your handheld leaf blower. It’s extendable for both single- and two-story homes and lets you walk along the edge of the house, blowing debris forward and out without ever needing to get on the roof or a ladder. Once your gutters are clear, rinse everything down with a hose, and you’re done.

The kit fits most handheld gas-powered blowers, but not backpack or battery blowers without significant modification. So keep that in mind while you’re shopping.

Stop into Carl’s, and we’ll show you what attachments fit your blower and how they work.

What’s the Best Way to Handle Leaves on a PNW Lawn?

A leaf blower is one of the easiest ways to clean up that thick mat of wet deciduous leaves sitting on your lawn that, if left through the fall and winter, can suffocate the grass underneath, trap moisture, and create an environment where mold and pests can thrive.

Leaf blowers get a bad rap for being loud, obnoxious, and polluting. But the reality is that a good blower is one of the most useful tools you can own, and they’ve improved a lot over the years. STIHL makes a few relatively low-noise blower options, and battery-powered models are significantly quieter than what most people picture when they think “leaf blower.”

But for most homeowners, a gas blower is still a better value, offering longer runtime and more power for moving heavy, wet leaves. A battery model is a great option for small areas and when you’re working in shorter bursts. Just know that runtime is more limited unless you buy extra batteries. Either way, a leaf blower is far more efficient than raking. What takes hours with a rake takes just minutes with a blower.

At Carl’s, we’ve got a full range of equipment to help you tackle the leaves on properties large and small and we can walk you through the options based on your property size and how you like to work.

Should I Trim Tree Limbs and Shrubs in the Fall?

Fall is the time to deal with damaged, cracked, or hanging limbs before winter rain puts additional weight on weakened branches or a windstorm sends them crashing down.

A pole saw is the right tool here, and it’s worth owning one if you’ve got a number of mature trees on your property. A battery-operated model is usually the best fit since most homeowners use it for only 30 to 60 minutes at a stretch before it sits unused for months.

The key thing people often get wrong is extending it all the way right out of the gate. Start with the shorter, closer branches first, then extend your pole as needed. This keeps the strain off your arms and gives you better control. Also, don’t stand directly under the limb you’re cutting, and don’t let the bar get pinched. To avoid pinching your pole saw, use a three-cut method on larger branches:

  1. Make an undercut. Cut a small notch about 1–2 inches deep on the bottom side of the branch, close to the trunk.
  2. Make the top cut. Cut directly above the undercut from the top of the branch. When the pole saw reaches the undercut, the branch should break away without closing down and pinching the bar.
  3. Remove the stub. Make a final clean cut across the branch collar, where the branch meets the trunk.

If you cut at an angle and the branch pinches, you won’t get it back down easily. Making the undercut first helps prevent the weight of the branch from closing around the bar as you make the top cut.

For smaller branches and pruning jobs, the STIHL GTA 26 Garden Pruner is a good option. It’s lightweight, easy to grab and go, and genuinely capable for anything in that small-to-medium branch range. Cleaning up overgrown shrubs and hedges improves airflow in the wetter months, which helps prevent fungal diseases that can thrive in damp, dense growth.

Carl’s Mower carries a full range of pole saws and hedge trimmers, from small handheld models perfect for spherical boxwoods to longer, two-handed models ideal for long rows of shrubs. Come in and handle a few. It’s the best way to figure out what’s going to work for you and your property.

Frequently Asked Questions About Fall Yard Cleanup

Can I use any leaf blower with the STIHL Gutter Cleaning Kit?

The STIHL Gutter Kit is designed to fit STIHL handheld blowers. It doesn’t attach to backpack or battery models without serious modification. If you’re not sure whether your blower is compatible, bring it into Carl’s Mower or give us a call and we’ll figure it out.

Should you prune fruit trees in October in the PNW?

While you can do light pruning of dead or damaged branches in late Fall, it’s best to save major shaping cuts for after the leaves have dropped and the tree is fully dormant, which can happen from late November through February and even into early spring. Waiting until dormancy helps reduce winter injury because pruning can temporarily lower a tree’s cold hardiness, while cuts that you make during dormant-season have time to heal before new growth begins.

What should I do with all the leaves and debris once they’re collected?

Composting is the best option for most yard debris. Leaves, in particular, break down into excellent compost over winter. For larger volumes of branches and trimmings, many areas in Whatcom County have yard waste drop-off or curbside pickup programs, including:

  • Cascade Compost and Soil – Lynden
  • Nooksack Valley Disposal – Lynden
  • Recycling & Disposal Services – Ferndale
  • Sanitary Service Company – Bellingham

Check your local municipality for details.

Do I need a chainsaw or will a pole saw handle most tree limb cleanup?

For most residential fall yard debris cleanup, including removing damaged limbs, clearing overhanging branches, and handling basic canopy work, a pole saw handles the job without needing a chainsaw. If you’ve got a larger limb that came down or significant storm damage, that’s when a chainsaw makes sense. Carl’s Mower carries and rents both, and we can help you figure out what the job actually calls for.
