  • A Quick Start Guide for Ariens Snow Throwers
January 6, 2026

Your trusty snow thrower is key to getting through harsh winters. You may only use it a few times a year, but properly using and caring for this outdoor power tool will help make sure it’s ready to go when you need to fire it up.

Our two-stage Ariens snow throwers are up to the task of tackling any wintry mix. From pro models to more compact options, Ariens can handle wet, heavy snowdrifts, clearing up to 30” at a time.  Before handling this power tool, we recommend going through the following pre-start checklist for optimal safety and function:

  • Gas. If you still have gasoline left in the tank from last season, it is best to get that out of the tank and replace it with a high-quality fuel. We are big fans of Aspen fuel, which is shelf stable for 3 years. Specially designed for small engines, this ethanol-free fuel reduces carbon buildup, results in easier starts, and extends the life of your engine. Run your machine with Aspen Fuel alone for best performance if your tank is empty.
  • Oil. Check the dipstick to ensure you’ve got an adequate amount of oil and change it annually (or more often if you run your machine 50 hours or more per season). Use a cold-weather oil made for small engines and designed to fire up quickly in low temps  (like a 5w30/10w30).
  • Spark plugs. If you’ve used the same spark plugs for a couple seasons, it’s time to replace them. Change them again after 100 hours of use.
  • Belts and cables. If your cables are visibly worn, stretched, or sagging, replace them.
  • Scraper bar. Inspect your scraper bar. Worn scraper bars won’t clear snow effectively. The bar is designed to be lowered as it wears, but if you’re seeing snow left behind once you’ve cleared it, then it should likely be replaced.
  • Auger. Lubricate your auger for easy operation and replace the paddles if they’re worn. Remove the shear pins and add grease until you see it oozing from the shear pin holes. Use a non-stick spray on your auger and chute to prevent clogging issues.
  • Tires. If needed, inflate tires to the recommended pressure and tighten all lug nuts and wheel bolts. Inspect the tires for any signs of slow leaks.
  • Skid shoes. Check the shoes on both sides of the housing. If they’re worn, flip them over. Replace once both sides wear through.
  • Axles. Inspect your axles. File rust away with sandpaper and grease the axle shafts.
  • Shear pins. Check for signs of age or wear and replace them if necessary. Grease the pins with an anti-freeze solution before inserting them. Keep spares in the nifty box attached to your snow thrower to use when a pin breaks mid-job.

Starting and Operating Your Snow Thrower

Ariens offers two starting options. If it’s been a while since you operated your snow thrower, plug in an extension cord and push the red button. If you’ve recently used it, simply pull the cord and get to work.

Read the owners manual and make sure you fully understand the safety features before starting up the engine. Follow these step-by-step directions for further assistance:

  • Turn the fuel on.
  • Push the primer a maximum of 3 times.
  • Turn the black lever clockwise to the choke position.
  • Set the throttle to the “rabbit” setting.
  • Reduce the choke

From there, make sure your machine starts and then let it run for at least 10 minutes (check oil first). Make small passes and overlap them to ensure you’re moving all of the snow, and keep a slow, steady pace. To clear slippery slopes, add a tire chain kit.

Snow Thrower Safety Tips

Safety always comes first when operating equipment. You should always wear safety glasses to protect your eyes and direct the discharge chute away from people, vehicles, buildings, and windows. Make sure kids and pets are safely out of the area and be cautious of any drivers.

Remove any obstacles and debris in the vicinity and keep your arms and legs away from all moving parts while the engine is running. Your snow thrower is a powerful tool but gravel can quickly damage it and cause serious issues, even under the all-steel hood. Never use your hands to clear a clog in the chute or at the axles: instead, turn off the engine and use the tools that come with the machine to dislodge any snow or ice.

It is also important to note that as easy as Arien machines are to run, they still require a fair amount of physical effort. Watch for signs of physical exhaustion or hypothermia. If you’re worn out or shivering excessively, be sure to rest and rehydrate before continuing.

Common First-Start Problems (and Quick Fixes)

There are a few common problems that may occur when starting up your machine. Fortunately, many of these issues can be resolved with just a few simple steps.

  • When the engine won’t start:
    • Fuel level: Check the gas level and refill if necessary.
    • Spark plugs: Clean or replace spark plugs.
    • Powered off: Turn the safety key to the “on” position.
  • When the auger doesn’t turn:
    • Broken shear pins: Replace and remember to restock your supply.
    • Loose or worn belts: Tighten the tension on the belt or replace it if it looks worn.
    • Clogged snow or ice: Use a heat gun or hair dryer to melt any snow or ice caught in the impeller. Spray the chute with lubricant to help prevent future clogging.
  • When the engine starts but stalls:
    • Old gas: Drain and refill the tank with Aspen Fuel.
    • Dirty carburetor: For a quick clean, remove the carburetor bowl and spray cleaning fluid into the tube. Be careful to reassemble properly (especially the gasket). For a professional cleaning, bring your machine to our experienced and knowledgeable mechanics.

Properly Storing Your Snow Thrower

You’ve finished today’s clearing job — now what?

Run the machine for a few minutes to remove any remaining snow and let the engine cool completely before putting it away. It’s best to store your machine in the garage but you can also cover it to help prevent exposure to moisture if you only have outdoor storage.

Proper use and care of this outdoor power tool will make sure it’s ready whenever Mother Nature decides to show off in the winter. If you have any questions or need help choosing, buying, or maintaining your snow thrower, contact Carl’s Mower & Saw for assistance!
