As the summer is winding down, it’s time to start thinking about prepping your lawn for those cold temps. And if you don’t prepare properly, you could be left with a less than stellar lawn come springtime. Check out these easy tips from Carl’s Mower and Saw to ensure your lawn is ready for the winter chill!

Aerate your lawn:

Think of aerating as giving your lawn a fresh breath of air. This process can drastically increase your lawn’s water intake, giving it the ability to grow lush and green once springtime rolls around. Heavy rain and snow can lead to a yard full of compacted soil — and that can lead to unhealthy grass. Be sure to aerate your yard to loosen up that dense soil.

Carl’s pro tip: Using the RYAN Lawnaire® Aerator, plug your lawn and allow a couple of days for everything to dry out.

Dethatch: This process involves removing unwanted debris from your lawn. Thatch is dead grass, moss, and other debris that can stunt the growth of your lawn. When thatch is left during the winter, snow and rain sit on top of this material, preventing the roots from getting the air and water they need. Be sure to detach your yard before the temps really start to drop!

Carl’s pro tip: Groom across the top of the surface of the grass to minimize potential damage. Dethatching on a dry day will help you get optimal results.

Protect Your Garden Year-round:

Our gardens bring life and positive energy to our yards here in the PNW. But in order to keep a healthy garden all year long, it’s important to keep up on winter prep maintenance. If you know gardening, then you know invasive weeds can wreak havoc. In order to prevent these troubling plants from causing harm in the spring, be sure to get rid of them before winter arrives. Amend the soil and add some extra mulch to help protect your plants.

Carl’s pro tip: While you want to make sure your plants are protected from the cold elements of winter, you also want to ensure they have the nutrients to thrive. Adding nutrients in the fall can give your garden the necessary time to break these materials down.
